In North American English, the /t/ sound is sometimes silent. It is usually silent if:

  1. there is an /n/ sound before the /t/;
  2. there is a stressed vowel before the /n/;
  3. there is an unstressed vowel after the /t/.

examples:

twenty        winter         printer        internet

Toronto       rented        painted       centre
