How to sound polite in English

Today in class we discussed the social uses of intonation in English.  Intonation is very important in English for projecting certain attitudes.  For example, to sound more polite in English, it is necessary to use a higher intonation than normal.  This means that people will use a higher pitch when talking.

This kind of intonation is sometimes used by all English speakers but it is very commonly used by people who work in certain professions that deal with the public (e.g. – waiters/waitresses, people in customer service etc.).
